Berlin to rozbudowana strategia czasu rzeczywistego (RTS), za której przygotowanie odpowiadają programiści uznanego studia developerskiego Stormregion (twórcy S.W.I.N.E. oraz popularnej serii Codename: Panzers). Jak wskazuje nazwa, akcja programu rozgrywa się w schyłkowym okresie II Wojny Światowej (lata 1944-1945).
Gracze wcielają się albo w dowódcę wojsk zachodnich Aliantów (USA, Wielka Brytania, Francja), albo kierują poczynaniami oddziałów rosyjskiej Armii Czerwonej. Celem działań obu stron jest zajęcie Berlina, stolicy Trzeciej Rzeszy. Nie od razu jednak walki rozpoczynają się na ulicach wspomnianego miasta. Wcześniej, grający muszą wykonać szereg różnorodnych zadań, w pewien sposób „otwierających” im drogę do Berlina, dopiero później zajmują się faktycznym zdobywaniem stolicy Niemiec.
Rozgrywka w sporym stopniu przypomina takie produkcje jak Codename: Panzers, czy Soldiers: Heroes of World War II. Uwaga osób siedzących przed monitorami koncentrowana jest głównie na działaniach militarnych. Nie sposób dopatrzeć się tutaj elementów ekonomicznych znanych z innych RTS-ów, w stylu chociażby kolekcjonowania surowców czy budowy baz. Do dyspozycji graczy oddano wiele typów jednostek (inne dla każdej z walczących stron; od piechoty do oddziałów zmechanizowanych w stylu czołgów, dział samobieżnych, etc.). Poszczególne misje oparte są na faktach historycznych, chociaż można je poprowadzić w inny sposób, niż ten, znany z kart podręczników.
Oprawę graficzną wykonano w pełnym trójwymiarze (dowolna rotacja kamery). Autorzy przywiązali sporo uwagi do szczegółowego wykonania wszystkich modeli pojazdów, płynnej animacji rozgrywki, bardzo dobrze wypada też środowisko, w jakim prowadzone są walki (większość elementów otoczenia ulega zniszczeniu). |
